The food and agricultural industry is the world’s largest industry. The multi-billion dollar industry employs thousands of food and agricultural graduates each year. The food products found on the grocery shelves, are all designed by food scientists! And many innovations were discovered by agro-industrial scientists. Graduates are employed by food, agro and related industries, federal and state governments, and universities to work at the interface between the production and delivery of food and agricultural products. There are more positions available for qualified food and agro-industrial scientists in the industry and governmental agencies awaiting graduates to fill them.

Have you ever wondered about the processes it takes to transform raw commodities to the food on your table? That’s what Food Technology is all about. Food Technology is a multi-disciplinary science that applies chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and nutrition to develop new food products and design new processes to improve the safety and quality of foods. Food scientists solve problems related to the production, preservation, processing, distribution, evaluation, safety, and utilization of food. Food scientists develop new foods, add value to raw food commodities and improve the quality and safety of existing food products. They also develop new, safer and more efficient production and processing technologies, and find ways to insure a safe, nutritious and economical food supply. Food Technology is science!


Agro-biotechnology is a range of tools, including traditional breeding techniques that alter living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products; improve plants or animals; or develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses. Modern biotechnology today includes the tools of genetic engineering. Increasing yield potential and desirable traits in plant and animal food products has long been a goal of agricultural science. That is still the goal of agricultural biotechnology, which can be an important tool in reducing hunger and feeding the planet’s expanding and longer-living population, while reducing the adverse environmental effects of farming practices.
